Sendrey, Gérard

1928-2022, France

Gérard Sendrey (1928–2022) was born on 12 March 1928 in Bordeaux, France. A career in local government that began in Bordeaux continued in nearby Bègles, where he became Secretary General and made his home. In 1989, he opened the gallery that was to become Création Franche, the Bègles municipal art museum, in 1996.

Gérard Sendrey had been drawing and painting since his early childhood and from the age of thirty-nine all his free time was devoted to his art. Prolifically creative, he experimented with media ranging from Indian ink to paint and from pastel to lead pencil, right down to the simplicity of the ballpoint and the reed pen. He painted on canvas, but paper remained his preferred support. He worked in series, mainly resorting to small and medium format images that include portraits, fantastic animals, genre scenes and landscapes.

Gérard Sendrey died on 22 January 2022.

His work can be found in numerous public collections: the Collection de l'Art Brut (Neuve Invention) in Lausanne, LaM Lille Métropole (L'Aracine collection); La Fabuloserie in Dicy, France; the Folk Art Museum in New York; the Charlotte Zander Museum in Bönnigheim, Germany; the Museum Im Lagerhaus in St. Gallen, Switzerland; the Anatole Jakovsky Museum of Naive Art in Nice, France; the Dr. Guislain Museum in Gent, Belgium; the Museum Gugging in Vienna; and the Slovak National Gallery in Bratislava.

Permanent exhibition

The museum constantly displays part of its collection, including works by major creators such as Aloïse Corbaz, Augustin Lesage, Marguerite Sirvins, and Auguste Walla. The Art Brut pieces are created by self-taught artists—solitary individuals living on the margins of society, patients of psychiatric hospitals—who produce work apart from tradition and artistic trends, without concern for public criticism or the gaze of others.
